IDENTITY: MY LIFE OF FAITH; Life in Christ – Sunday, July 23, 2017

Here are some references used in the July 23rd lesson and some thought provoking nuggets of information.

Life in Christ – Luke 9:18-26 – Jesus' identity is foundational to who I am.

Who are you?  Most struggle with our identity as some point.  Not knowing who you are can really mess up where you are and what you do. Our identity in Christ shapes our true defining identity.  Let this study help you be sure of who you are in Christ and how you can live out that identity.

“Who do the crowds say that I am?”
“Who do you say that I am?”
“The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.”

“If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will save it."

Jesus is God's Son.1  The Messiah.2
Jesus sacrificed himself for us.3
Following Jesus means self sacrifice.4
                                                                                      

1 Son: from Old English sunu "son, descendant,"from PIE *su(e)-nu- "son" a derived noun from root *seue-"to give birth"

2 Messiah: from Late Latin Messias, from Greek Messias, from Aramaic (Semitic) meshiha and Hebrew mashiah "the anointed" (of the Lord), from mashah "anoint." This is the word rendered in Septuagint as Greek Khristos (see Christ).

2 Anoint:  from Old French enoint "smeared on,"  from Latin inunguere "to anoint," from in- "in, into" + unguere "to smear." Originally in reference to oil smeared into for medicinal purposes. 

3 Sacrifice:  "offering of something to a deity as an act of propitiation or homage;" from sacra "sacred rites" + facere "to make, to do."

Jesus is God's descendant who was given birth.

Jesus is the one who has God's anointing (The Holy Spirit "smeared into" him).

Jesus offered his "self" to God on our behalf.

Following Jesus means offering our "selves" to God.

Prayer List:  I am keeping descriptors vague and general as a reminder of needs discussed more than a to-do list to act upon.
