Aug. 27, 2017 – Life on Mission

CHURCH IS ALSO CANCELLED FOR AUG. 27, 2017

1 Corinthians 9:19-27  We can better share the gospel when we step into the shoes of others. We need to work at it.

Empathy museum

Step into the shoes of others to share Christ.

Fit in with people so that by all possible means some might be saved. Do all this for the sake of the gospel to share its blessings.

Sharing Christ takes discipline and self-denial.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? ... Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. ...Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. ...I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so ... I ... will not be disqualified for the prize.

Empathy:  the psychological identification with or experiencing the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another.

Why do we need empathy? Empathy “allows us to create bonds of trust, it gives us insights into what others may be feeling or thinking; it helps us understand how or why others are reacting to situations, it sharpens our ‘people acumen’ and it informs our decisions.” A world without it would be chaotic and uncivilized. Empathy creates connections between people, bringing them together and helping to forge friendships and love. It makes us feel as if someone cares for us.  Without it we would feel vulnerable and lonely.

Walk a Mile in My Shoes Lyrics by Joe South

If I could be you, if you could be me for just one hour
If we could find a way to get inside each other's mind, mmmm
If you could see you through my eyes instead of your ego
I believe you'd be surprised to see that you've been blind, mmmm

Chorus:
Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Hey, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes

Now your whole world you see around you is just a reflection
And the law of Karma says you're gonna reap just what you sow
So unless you've lived a life of total perfection
You'd better be careful of every stone that you should throw - yeh-heh

And yet we spend the day throwin' stones at one another
'Cause I don't think or wear my hair the same way you do, mmmm
Well, I may be common people but I'm your brother
And when you strike out you're tryin' to hurt me it's hurtin' you
Lord, have mercy

Chorus

And there are people on reservations and out in the ghettos
And brother, there, but for the grace of God, go you and I, yeh-heh
And if I only had wings of a little angel, well
Don't you know, I'd fly to the top of a mountain and then I'd cry

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Babe, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Better walk a mile in my shoes
Try it before what you're doing
