YHWH YR'E (The Lord sees; The Lord provides)

Genesis 22:1-14

Abraham:

  • walked together with his son
  • arrived
  • built an altar
  • arranged the wood that his son had carried
  • bound his son
  • placed him on the altar
  • prepared to slaughter his son as a burnt offering.
"Father the fire and the wood are here but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"

God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering.

The Lord will provide:  Jehovah Jireh   YHWH YR'E

The Hebrew word yr'e has to do with the word "see" such as see, saw, seen, etc.  Basically Abraham expressed that the God named YHWH sees our condition and will provide the lamb for the burnt offering.  Basically "God knows, and will provide for our needs."

About 2000 years after the time of Abraham another sacrifice would be offered near this same location–the sacrifice of the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.  Jesus, God's perfect lamb, offered himself as the complete and final sacrifice to meet our greatest need–to take away our guilt and free US from slavery...to sin.

Land of Moriah:
  • place Abraham almost sacrificed Isaac, but was stopped by God;
  • place where David sacrificed to turn away God's punishment for David's sin of arrogance and pride;
  • place where Solomon built his Temple to YHWH so that all might sacrifice to the Lord;
  • place where Jesus sacrificed himself so that ALL could enter into a personal relationship with God.
